In 1977, the Manu was declared nucleus area of the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and ten years later, it was designated as Natural Patrimony of Humanity. The park protects areas as diverse as the high Andean plains, situated at over 13,123 fasl, cloud forests and the Amazon basin. According to its use, it is divided in three different areas: a Nucleus Zone, an intangible territory, location of all research work; a Reserved or buffer zone, where many controlled tourist activities take place; and a Cultural Zone, formed by public lands inhabited by stable populations.
DAY 1: CUSCO - ATALAYA
Bus trip through the Andes (reaching over 4,000 m), visiting the picturesque village of Paucartambo and the mysterious cloud forest and ending in the tropical lowland rainforest (450 m). In Atalaya we build camp.DAY 2: ATALAYA. MANU RlVER
Head off down the turbulent Alto Madre de Dios river by motorized canoe as far as Boca Manu (the Mouth of the Manu river). From here the trip continues up the Manu river where we camp on one of the sandy beaches at dusk.DAY 3: MANU RIVER .LAKE SALVADOR
Continue up the Manu river to get beach of Lake Salvador, where we make camp for three nights.DAY 4: VISITING LAKE OTORONGO
Four hour hike through Manu's Virgin forest to Lake Otorongo. In the afternoon a visit to a 12 m high tower at Otorongo's lake lodge Return to base camp at Salvador by boat.DAY 5: EXPLORING LAKE SALVADOR
Excursion on one of the most beautiful lakes of the Manu basin by "Catamaran"
Observe colourful birds as we11 as the Giant Otter, a predator on the verge of extinction.
At night a hike with flashlights and another ride by "Catamarán to look for the impressive Caiman". DAY 6: LAKE SALVADOR. MACAW LICK
After a very early morning walk, we start the boat trip to the Macaw Lick. In the afternoon there is time for a hike on the trails near the lick. We spend the night on the beach of the Macaw Lick. DAY 7: MACAW LICK
From early morning we watch the fascinating color spectacle of parakeets Parrots and the large Areas eating clay. On the river bank. In the afternoon we go back right up the Alto Madre de Dios River. Camp is on one of its beaches.DAY 8: ALTO MADRE DE DIOS RlVER .ATALAYA
We continue by boat up the Alto Madre de Dios River, we get an impressive view of the south-eastern Andes. In Atalaya we camp for our last night.DAY 9: ATALAYA. CLOUD FOREST .CUSCO
An early morning bus ride takes us to the cloud forest to see the unusual Cock of the Rock. Continue to Cusco.
In a 7 DAY VERSION of the FIXED DEPARTURE PROGRAM one returns by plane from Boca Manu to Cusco, after seeing the Macaw Lick on the morning of the 7th day (return to Cusco around 14:00 hrs).
